Programme Background

The Doctor of Philosophy in Computing is a research-intensive doctoral programme designed to develop highly competent researchers, scholars, and experts capable of advancing knowledge in the field of computing. The programme emphasises original research that contributes to new discoveries, innovative technologies, and practical solutions to complex computing challenges. Through the integration of Naqli and Aqli knowledge, the programme nurtures graduates with strong research capability, ethical values, professional integrity, and leadership qualities. Conducted entirely by research under the supervision of experienced academics, the programme provides opportunities for candidates to undertake advanced studies in areas including artificial intelligence, software engineering, data science, information security and assurance, intelligent systems, networking, and other emerging computing disciplines. The programme is developed in accordance with the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF) and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) Programme Standards for Computing.

Programme Objectives

The Doctor of Philosophy in Computing programme aims to produce graduates who are able to:

1. Demonstrate expert knowledge in computing and generate original contributions to the advancement of computing research.

2. Conduct high-quality, independent, and innovative research that addresses complex problems through advanced technical and scientific approaches.

3. Demonstrate academic leadership, effective communication, collaboration, lifelong learning, and entrepreneurial thinking within research and professional environments.

4. Uphold professional ethics, integrity, and Islamic values while contributing to the advancement of computing knowledge and practice.
 

Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO)

Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Integrate advanced knowledge through systematic, comprehensive, and critical understanding of current issues in computing research.
  2. Develop original research that generates new knowledge and meets recognised academic standards.
  3. Design innovative computing solutions through advanced technical and scientific expertise.
  4. Demonstrate effective interaction with researchers, professionals, and diverse communities through scholarly engagement.
  5. Communicate research findings effectively through technical presentations and scholarly publications.
  6. Select and utilise appropriate digital technologies for advanced research analysis and evaluation.
  7. Apply suitable quantitative and research methodologies to analyse and evaluate numerical and graphical data.
  8. Demonstrate leadership, teamwork, autonomy, and professional responsibility in research that contributes to technological, academic, and societal advancement.
  9. Integrate knowledge to promote lifelong learning and the generation of new research ideas.
  10. Demonstrate entrepreneurial thinking in research and innovation.
  11. Practise professional ethics and integrity in research in accordance with Islamic values.

Graduates of the Doctor of Philosophy in Computing are equipped to become leaders in academia, research institutions, government agencies, multinational corporations, and technology-driven industries. Career opportunities include Professor, University Lecturer, Senior Research Scientist, Principal Researcher, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Artificial Intelligence Researcher, Data Science Specialist, Cybersecurity Researcher, ICT Policy Advisor, Digital Innovation Consultant, Research and Development (R&D) Director, Technology Strategist, and other senior specialist or executive positions requiring advanced research expertise. The programme also prepares graduates to lead interdisciplinary research initiatives and contribute to national and international technological advancement.

 

a. A Master’s degree in a related field or other recognised fields as approved by the Senate; or

b. Other qualifications recognised as equivalent to a Master’s degree by the Government of Malaysia; or

c. Applicants with qualifications in non-related fields or without relevant working experience are required to undertake prerequisite courses as determined by the Senate; or

d. Fulfil the requirements for APEL admission (subject to programmes approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency [MQA]).

  2. Effective for students registering from Semester 1, Academic Session 2024/2025 (164th Senate Meeting).
