Background of the programme

The Masters of Law (International Law) programme contains unique courses such as Islamic International Law and International Islamic Humans Rights Law that are in line with USIM's thrust in offering education based on the integration of Naqli and Aqli. It also introduces the latest and contemporary courses in international law such as Outer Space Law, Public Health Law and International Investment Law. The aim of this program is to produce graduates with advanced knowledge in International Law who are able to critically evaluate, analyze, synthesize and conduct related research. Malaysia has signed and expressed commitment to several protocols of International Law. Hence, there is a need for knowledgeable and skilled human capital in identifying, understanding, interpreting and applying International Law through research in voicing Malaysia's stance on related international issues.

Objectives of the programme

The Masters of Law (International Law) programme is designed to achieve the following objectives:

  • Graduates who are able to apply advanced knowledge in the field of International Law.
  • Graduates with high levels of understanding, research and analytical skills to provide quality research and services to the public and private sectors in the field of International Law.
  • Graduates who are able to continuously improve their knowledge, understanding and abilities by using information technology to create career opportunities in the profession related to International Law either nationally or globally.
  • Graduates who are able to communicate effectively to lead and engage in research teams as well as explore real problem-solving in the field of International Law and across multiple disciplines.
  • Graduates who are able to synthesize and promote ethical and professional values in providing services to customers and society as a whole in relation to International Law.

  13. International Criminal Justice

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates from the Master of Law (International Law) program have the potential to work in the public and private sectors who require advanced knowledge of:

a) international and diplomatic relations, and

b) international law and governance.

 

Types of careers or positions for graduates are such as:

a) Academician or lecturer at Public/Private University;

b) Policymakers;

c) Consultants in law firms and international organisations;

d) Program manager;

e) Administrative officers in government departments: diplomatic administrative officer, public administration officer, human resources administrative officer, assistant registrar at Public/Private University; Manager, Senior Religious Officer

f) Assistant Secretary in SUHAKAM and related agencies;

g) Graduate Education Service Officer (Teacher);

h) Training Officers and Research Officers at Training Institutes (ILKAP, ILIM, ISM

Admission to Master’s Degree by Coursework

  1. A bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 or equivalent, as accepted by the Senate; or
  2. A bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and not meeting a CGPA of 2.50, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment.
  3. Candidates without a qualification in the related fields or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the Senate and meet the minimum CGPA based on (1) to (2).
  4. Other qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with honours AND relevant professional work experience.

Note: 1-year work experience is equivalent to 0.05 CGPA

(1)  An applicant shall show evidence of proficiency in the English language based on the following criteria: 

  1. TOEFL minimum score of 180 (computer-based) or 64 (internet-based); or
  2. IELTS minimum score of Band 5; or
  3. MUET minimum score of Band 3; or
  4. graduated from institutions that use English as the main medium of instruction, AND will be required to seat for University English Proficiency Test (UEPT) with minimum score of Band 3; or
  5. graduated in the field of Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL), English Language Studies (ELS) and equivalent from a university recognised by the Senate; or
  6. a native speaker of English.

(2)  Research-mode applicant who intends to write his/her thesis in Arabic will be required to fulfil the criteria as follows:

  1. TOEFL minimum score of 150 (computer-based) or 52 (internet-based); or
  2. IELTS minimum score of Band 4; or
  3. MUET minimum score of Band 2; or
  4. UEPT minimum score of Band 2.

(3)  An applicant who does not fulfil any of the criteria under (1) & (2) will be allowed to register conditionally and is required to fulfil any of the criteria under (1) or (2), within 12 months (for Master’s students) and 24 months (for Ph.D. students).
